leave no child behind or separate but equal?

Thu Mar 06, 2008 at 07:35:42 PM PDT

there's been a big pushback from schools that have lots of bilingual students because the rules of the no child left behind act are that EVERY student should meet certain minimum requirements for succeeding in education. however, this pushback could lead to a separate-but-equal system where children whose primary language is not English are passed into society without succeeding in basic English skills. how well did separate but equal work the last time we tried it?

I like Nader better

Mon Feb 25, 2008 at 10:37:51 PM PDT

I was pissed when Nader ran to the left of Gore in 2000. But I wasn't pissed at Nader, I was pissed at Gore for throwing away the election, not running on his past record, and not moving more to the left.

words mean nothing

Tue Feb 19, 2008 at 07:04:06 AM PDT

Clinton's camp has been deriding Obama for his oratory skills, saying that words don't matter. Barrack offered up a few examples of where they were wrong, including:

"I have a dream," MLK jr.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal," Thomas Jefferson

"We have nothing to fear but fear itself," FDR.

I concur -- words are very important. Here's a nice repository for some of my favorite quotes.

Wed Jan 30, 2008 at 01:22:43 PM PDT

will mrs. clinton subjugate obama's followers by offering him the veep job? or will obama latch onto edwards' push to fight poverty, and by doing so add him to his ticket?

Roseanne tells it like it is

Fri Jan 11, 2008 at 01:40:46 PM PDT

We haven't heard much from Roseanne Barr this election cycle, but now she's telling it how it is.

any truth to the john edwards love child story?

Wed Dec 19, 2007 at 01:23:25 PM PDT

the national enquirer is reporting that john edwards' girlfriend is having his baby.

update: 08/08/08

to all the jerks who called me names and told me that I shouldn't even be asking these questions, how would you be feeling now if Edwards was our candidate and not Obama? recall my previous posts -- I've been an ardent Edwards supporter from the beginning, and like many of you, I feel betrayed by John Edwards' affair. Thank GOD he didn't get the nod.

And to any of you aspiring presidential hopefuls -- keep it in your pants, ok? We don't need another JFK / Clinton / Hart / Edwards. I'm tired of these hijinks preventing loyal Dems like me from achieving our higher goals.

bomb iran now

Tue Dec 04, 2007 at 09:26:44 PM PDT

this is sarcasm, ok?

i don't think we should or could bomb iran without devastating repercussions, but i have some concerns about what we know we know about iran's nuclear programs, what we know we don't know, and even scarier, what we don't know we don't know -- the "unknown unknowns".

hillary pulls bush-style stunt

Sun Nov 11, 2007 at 07:53:46 PM PDT

at a recent debate, hillary's staff plants a question. this is similar to how bush-style events since President GHW Bush controlled access to a political talk in 1989.

turkish genocide & who should pay now

9/11 is a joke

Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 07:29:47 PM PDT

sorry for stealing the line from public enemy's song, 9-11 is a joke, but today is the first time in 6 years i've been able to avoid any mention of our losses. and it feels good.

ending 1300 years of shia/sunni violence

Mon Sep 10, 2007 at 04:18:23 PM PDT

In 632, Uthman was murdered while at prayer, allowing Shiat Ali to ascend to the Caliphacy. In 661, Shiat Ali was murdered by one of his own men. These two deaths predicated the current debate/battle between the Sunnis and Shi'ites, and is the basis for Muslim-on-Muslim violence in Iraq. It also played a role in the devastating Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988).

bin laden's new video

Fri Sep 07, 2007 at 08:40:16 PM PDT

so osama bin laden has a new video coming out. great news in our war on terror, huh? dude doesn't have the cajones to show up on live television; he's probably dead. but how come the media isn't questioning bush why he stopped the search for bin laden to move the troops to iraq, which even he has occasionally admitted wasn't responsible for 9/11.
